31/12/2020 – Poem a Day Compilation
You weren’t there in January
My birthday, you did miss
You weren’t there in February
To plant a Valentine’s kiss
You weren’t there in March
To celebrate St Patrick’s Day
You weren’t there in April
When Easter came my way
You weren’t there in May
Seeing out the autumn leaves
You weren’t there in June
To wrap me in winter weaves
You weren’t there in July
When the year was half way done
You weren’t there in August
To feel your cheeks burn as you run
You weren’t there in September
To see whose team had won
You weren’t there in October
Partaking in Halloween fun
You weren’t there in November
To weep solemn tears
You weren’t there in December
Celebrating Christmas with our peers
Now you’re not here yet again
As the old year gives way to the new
But nothing ever changes
And it’ll be another year without you
Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry. (W.B. Yeats) Here lies that which is inside no more, that which burns my mind and must be expelled. Here lies the greatest of all inventions. Here lies words.

Tea and Biscuits
07/11/2020 – Poem a Day Compilation
Won’t you come round for tea and biscuits?
We’ll sit on the balcony
And while away the hours
Of this glorious autumn day,
Watching the world go by
As we discuss world affairs
In every increasing detail
Until we have solved all the problems
If only we had the available resources.
Won’t you come round for tea and biscuits?
I’ll put the kettle on as we sit
Snuggled by the wood burner in the kitchen
As winter draws in around us
Swapping gossip from the shopping queue
Or school pick-ups at the gates
While the cats weave delicately
Between our feet under the table
Looking for attention and treats.
Won’t you come round for tea and biscuits?
The smell for the garden in just divine
As all the flowers burst into life
Heralding spring has arrived
And, if we’re extraordinarily lucky,
We’ll hear the baby birds chirping in the nest
At the bottom of the garden
While their mum picks worms and bugs
From the veggie patch I haven’t managed to kill.
Won’t you come round for tea and biscuits?
We might make it an iced tea this time
As the summer sun is beating down
And these temperatures are just too much
For hot drinks in the afternoon
But we can sit in the shade on my new umbrella
That the kids bought me for my birthday
So I could enjoy the space with you
Whatever time of year it happened to be.
Won’t you come round for tea and biscuits?

A Year in Haiku
06/10/2020 – Poem a Day Compilation
I
The new year rolls in
Resolutions freshly made
Soon to be cast off
II
Hot summer kisses
As I run across the sand
On bare burning feet
III
Autumn falls slowly
Summer lingers far too long
I don’t like the heat
IV
Easter brings me joy
In days spent with family
And much chocolate
V
Weather cools more now
The leaves turn on the branches
And life is better
VI
A nip in the air
Is more consistent outside
And night falls early
VII
The snow is falling
Up in the mountain ranges
But rare on the coast
VIII
Winter bites at toes
Left uncovered by blankets
On dark, frosty nights
IX
The spring drizzle falls
Riots of colour explode
Under blue-grey skies
X
The year continues
Halloween has been creeping
But I don’t like it
XI
It’s warming up now
Tourists a more common sight
I prefer quiet
XII
Christmas is too hot
For a roast turkey dinner,
Better for cold cuts
