Wonderland

10/04/2021 - Poem a Day Compilation

Oh, to be Alice

Falling down the rabbit hole

Escaping from day-to-day life

Into a world of fantasy

Or maybe to be Dorothy,

Spirited away to Oz

Only to find out

There’s no place like home

The Bookstore

18/03/2021 – Poem a Day Compilation

Walking through the doors

There’s an unmistakable smell

Fresh coffee and old books

And just a hint of freshly baked cakes

The chairs are big and comfy

Like grandma’s warm embrace

And the service is friendly

And they’re always up for a chat

Sometimes I go in for breakfast

Bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes

A book of poetry with well-worn pages

And a large cappuccino to sip

It’s a good place to people watch

On a sunny weekday morn

The park across the path bustling

With kids before they head to school

When I meet friends for lunch

Chicken salad with sweet chilli sauce

And a cool class of fresh lemonade

Discussing the latest sporting memoir

It’s easy to lose track of time

And before you know it it’s been hours

Though it’s never a problem

To settle in for half the day

On occasion, when I don’t feel like cooking,

I’ll savour a frittata and side salad

And a large pot of peppermint tea

With my favourite Stephen King

It doesn’t matter what time of day or night

It always feels like home

A little shop around the corner

That takes me a world away

The Entrance

04/11/2020 – Poem a Day Compilation

I stood before the gates

That towered o’er my head

Majestic in its grandeur

Behind which nobility’s bred

I turned the key hesitantly

The cold metal creaking as it turned

Opening a whole world for me

For which I’d always yearned

A tree lined avenue stretched out before

And far into the distance

Meandering through the grounds

Following the path of least resistance

As I walk, I wonder silently

About the generations who have been before

Who they were and how they lived

What was fact and what folklore

Then, rising up before my eyes

A palace fit for any queen

With the grandest of steps ascending

What visitors they had seen

Imposing wooden doors, tall and proud

Daring weary travellers to try their luck

To win a fair maiden’s hand, perhaps

Or show what courage they could pluck

But no need for luck that day

I was the rightful heir to the manor

Accompanied not by a fanfair

Nor met by any banner

Just the quiet knowledge of being home

The work of restoration all to come

For this stunning, grand old dame

And for the house that will not succumb

Home Planet

30/06/2020 – Poem a Day Compilation

I look around this world,

Its wonders stretched before me,

And ask myself one question

That everyone should pose:

Where’s the sense of adventure

In beating a well-worn path

When there’s a whole planet to explore

And a lifetime’s memories to be made?

I have stood atop a mountain

Way up above the clouds,

Staring out to the horizon

And down to valleys below.

I have crossed vast oceans

To far and distant lands

Where I do not speak the language

But can always understand.

It is the beauty that binds us,

The soaking in of new sights,

The sharing of our doorstep

With those from foreign lands.

I have gazed upon great monuments

Built to honour kings and queens of yore

And stepped inside magnificent temples

Dedicated to an everlasting love.

I have driven across continents

Their length and breadth laid bare

For the simple pleasure

Of seeing what was there.

When you marvel at the intricate –

The smallest petal, a delicate wing –

And take in the riches money can’t buy

But a sense of wonder can.

There are so many places still

To spark my imagination.

I cannot dream of new worlds when

I have not done with this one yet.

My city

04/05/2020 - Iso Well-Being Compilation

I love this city.
It sparkles and it shines.
It soothes my nerves,
And excites my mind.

I couldn’t live anywhere
But in its warm embrace.
It invigorates me, wholly,
And feeds my desires.

Every time I leave it
I know, when I return,
It will always welcome me
Back home where I belong.

There’s nowhere else on earth
I’d rather be right now
Than tucked up in my bed,
Listening to my city hum.
