Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry. (W.B. Yeats) Here lies that which is inside no more, that which burns my mind and must be expelled. Here lies the greatest of all inventions. Here lies words.

Rugged
I knew a rugged gentleman
Who had a rugged face
He lived in rugged mountains
And had a rugged place
He drank from a rugged cup
And ate with a rugged spoon
Carved with a rugged axe
And his rugged voice did croon
He sang a rugged love song
About his rugged life
And how his rugged heart
Wished for a rugged wife
He dreamt of rugged children
To take on rugged hikes
To swim in rugged rivers
And ride on rugged bikes
So, he packed his rugged rucksack
And walked some rugged miles
Beneath the rugged trees tops
Past buildings with rugged tiles
When he came by a rugged cliff
The rugged view he admired
Until his rugged eyes fell upon
What his rugged self desired
He climbed down the rugged rocks
Across the rugged beach he ran
And asked this rugged woman
To join his rugged clan
Together they climbed the rugged cliffs
And followed the rugged path
Over rugged hillsides where
Rock pools formed a rugged bath
Under rugged skies they slept
Sheltered by rugged caves
Watching rugged storms brew
And cast rugged waves
Before them stretch a rugged coast
Rugged peaks at their back
A rugged little homeland
For them to start their rugged pack

Waiting for Inspiration
Do not wait for life to happen
When life is what we make it.
Be the person you dreamt of being
By reaching out and grabbing your dreams.
Sitting back and watching the world turn
Will not move you forward in this life.
Break through the fear of the unknown
Like an animal escaping from a cage.
Create the experiences you desire
And do that which brings you joy.
And if you find yourself adrift
Be inspired by what life throws at you.

Dreamer
The Beatles had it right
When they asked us to imagine
Though they also recognised
That some would see them as dreamers
But is that such a bad thing to be?
I want to be a part of something
Something that is universally good,
That is built from the dreams of the many
Who had a vision of a better future
In which we could all follow our dreams.
Thoreau said that dreams
Were the touchstones of our characters –
The standard by which we should be judged
And to which we should live up to
In this world of our own making.
If you dream just for yourself
Then you live just for yourself
And I hope my dreams are bigger
Than the small bubble I occupy
And reaches out to those around.
If I could have a dream
Like Martin Luther King, Junior
That inspires generations
From all around the world
What a good dream it would be.
To have a dream that resonates
So strongly around the world
That it is talked about and quoted
For years and years to come
Long after you’ve passed on.

Black and White Dreaming
Sometimes I dream in black and white,
Stripped of all its colour and its hue,
Just shades of grey and nothing more,
A dull and dreary view.
I see a rose that should be red
But is instead a washed out grey;
I yearn for its vibrancy
But it’s not for me today.
I pass by a field of corn
But no yellow can I see
As if the world has been drained
Of all the colours that there be.
The rainbow is an imitation
Of its brilliant best;
Not even muted tones shine through,
No technicolour vest.
Though they are not permanent,
They still haunt me when I wake;
And I wish to be rid of them
With every breath I take.

The Architect
I’ve always wanted to be an architect,
Ever since I was a little child,
But circumstances conspired against me
And I chose a different path.
I wish I could go back
And offer my teenage self advice
To follow your heart
Instead of what you feel obliged to do.
I would have told myself to work harder
Because it’s something I’ve come to regret
And now it feels impossible
To reach for that dream again.

Digital Daydreams
31/05/2020 – Iso Well-Being Compilation
One day, in the future,
Computers may be so advanced
They seem to be almost human
And think just as we can.
But what would they dream about?
Would they daydream just like us?
Would their synthetic brains dream
Of love and other human stuff?
I wonder if they’d let themselves
Drift off in wonderous thought
And forget the world around them
Just as I am wont to do.
Would they think of electric sheep
To lull themselves to sleep
And have nightmares of being unplugged
As they recharged themselves at night?
If a machine could daydream
In all its digital glory
I hope it would be in pixels
And not in zeros and ones.

A bad dream
02/05/2020 - Iso Well-Being Compilation
I’d like to wake up from this dream now
Because it’s not fun in the least.
I’m stuck in my own private nightmare
Looking out at a world I don’t recognise.
Devils call daily for sacrifices,
Infecting the minds of those near,
And there’s nothing I can do but cry
And scream until I can’t speak anymore.
I long for another reality,
One with laughter and joy – not this mess.

Demons
Though mostly in my head.
Sometimes they escape outside
And creep around my bed.
There are big ones, and ugly,
That scare me out o' my wits.
They have big jaws and sharp teeth
To tear me all to bits.
Some are small and pestering
With eyes as red as fire.
They chase me through my nightmares
As if they never tire.
They live in the dark and cold
Where the sun never shines,
Sleep amongst the shadows deep,
Eat where the devil dines.
Never there was such foul beasts
That went searching for my soul.
These things of pure evil
With fur as black as coal.
Then I saw a splendid light,
I could not speak a word.
It shone from within my heart
And I flew just like a bird.
Over mountains, over seas,
Like an angel with her wings.
I was free from harm and threat,
Free from warlocks, elfins, kings.
There was not a care to find,
I could do most anything.
Swim in the deepest ocean,
Talk to the birds who sing.
Soon I came back down to earth
And found myself in bed.
For I had been asleep again,
That's is all that's to be said.
